Screen shot setup guide and configuration.

To help you sort out any problems we have put in some screen shots. All you have to do is match the screens and follow everything to the letter.

NOTE: The following information is for a NETGEAR DG834 ADSL firewall router.  This is an Ethernet configuration, some generic wireless information is included in this article.  Some information below may vary on your router.

Router basic setup.

First SHUTDOWN your PC.

The ports on the NETGEAR DG834 are (from left to right): Power (round), 4 Ethernet ports ((RJ45) all identical), Reset hole (small hole), DSL port.  On the image of the filter we use a blue/green cable for the ADSL cable (top left of filter image), connect this on the far right DSL port.  Connect a Ethernet cable (is the same shape as the ADSL cable but a little wider to any Ethernet port on the router and a Ethernet port on your PC).  Finally connect the power cable.

On the front of the router we have some lights, (from left to right): Power on light, Test light (Tick symbol), Internet Light (I symbol), Ethernet lights (1,2,3,4).  When the router is powered on the first three lights come on, then the Tick will stop flashing.  Now power on your PC and one of the Ethernet lights (1, 2, 3 or 4) will come on and start flashing.

PC setup for ADSL router.

NOTE: The next steps are based on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.  If you don't have this we suggest you download it or get a FREE Service pack 2 or 3 CD (found in computer shops and on Microsoft's web site).

From the Windows desktop click START then CONTROL PANEL:

Then, SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW to get to this:

Double click Network Connections:

Look for a Local Area Connection, Right click and choose Properties:

Now double click on INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) in the This connection uses the following items box:

Place a dot next to Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.  Click OK, OK, and close Network connections.

From the Windows desktop click START then CONTROL PANEL:

Then, SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW to get to this:

Double click Internet options to get either of these:

Internet Explorer 8/7 Internet Explorer 6

First make sure the Home page ADDRESS is HTTP://WWW.RKD.ORG.UK  When you have finished with this screen click on CONNECTIONS then you will see:

If the DIAL-UP- AND VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK SETTINGS box has items in it is a good idea to remove them.  When it is blank make sure there is a dot on NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION. Click LAN SETTINGS then you will see:

Tick AUTOMATICALLY DETECT SETTINGS.  Now click OK, Apply and OK and close control panel.

ADSL router software setup.

Open Internet explorer.    Delete the address in the address bar and type in the IP address of your router, in our case 192.168.0.1 , press enter:

On this screen type admin in the User name box and password in the Password box and click OK:

On the Netgear screen Click Setup Wizard:

On here Choose UK as the country and English as the language, then click Yes and next:

On this screen you need to enter your ISP details.  For your LOGIN you need to first know your e-mail address as it is part of it. EXAMPLE if your E-MAIL address is john@smith.fsnet.co.uk your LOGIN would be smith.fsnet.co.uk ALL in SMALL letters.  Don't forget to add @fs to your LOGIN, so our example LOGIN would be smith.fsnet.co.uk@fs Only you know your PASSWORD. But it is CaSe SeNsItIvE for example if your password is MillenniumUK you CANT type millenniumuk or MILLENNIUMUK it has to be the same as when you chose it.  Note: You can only check the status of caps lock by checking the Caps lock Light on your keyboard, or taskbar.  When done click Apply.  This will take you back to the Netgear Router Status screen.  Scroll down on the left and click Logout:

On this message click YES.  Now your internet works.  Open Internet explorer and you can visit websites without dialling up.

Basic Wireless information.

For wireless broadband you need the following:

A Router capable of wireless (Normally has an Ariel).

A PC or Laptop with a wireless card built in it, or a PC with a PCI wireless card or USB wireless adapter.  Or a Laptop with a PCMCIA wireless card or USB wireless adapter.

Make sure there are no other items in the vicinity that could interfere with the wireless waves.  The range of the wireless is best if the router is placed high up (in attic).  The typical range will only be over the space of a standard house, but you can get signal boosters.

NOTE: The next steps are based on Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.  If you don't have this we suggest you download it or get a FREE Service pack 2 or 3 CD (found in computer shops and on Microsoft's web site).  For a wireless setup Service Pack 3 is strongly recommended.

To setup wireless we advise you set it up with Ethernet first as shown above.  For wireless you need to click on Start, then Control panel from the desktop:

Then, SWITCH TO CLASSIC VIEW to get to this:

Double click Network Connections:

Look for something called wireless, Right click and choose View available wireless networks.  On this screen you will see the name of your router, select it and click connect.  You may experience a warning, continue to connect.  Now if you have setup your router as advised in the Ethernet configuration you can use Internet explorer to view web pages.

Wireless connections are very insecure.  You are advised to setup security like WEP or WPA.  We cannot help you with this unless you become a member.

  Hints and Tips.

If you have any problems setting up a ADSL router we advise you temporarily turn off any firewall software.  If you still have problems setting it up we suggest you reinstall your firewall solution.  It is recommended that you use good firewall, anti virus and spy ware protection when using the internet.

If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.

On Windows XP there is a brilliant tool called system restore where you can go back in time.  Try it!  Click Start>All programs>Accessories>system tools>system restore.  You get this:

Click Next:

On the Calendar, click a date that is in bold or stands out, On the right click a time.  A system check point is a very good restore point.  Click next:

Click Next and follow this.  It will restart your PC and restore files back to as they were.

If you are having problems with a connection there are two things we suggest.  Repair connection, to do this click, start, control panel, switch to classic view, double click network connections.  Now right click the Local Area Connection or 'wireless' connection and choose repair.  If that fails reset the router.  To do this, shut down the PC.  Unplug the cables from the router apart from the power cable.  Poke something into the reset hole on the router for twenty seconds.  Now you need to setup the router from scratch.  Follow our Router basic setup guides.

If you have regular problems with routers please check the router manufacturers web sites for the latest firmware updates.

Got any suggestions or can't sort out the problem from here, first PLEASE check the related pages below (Netgear manual requires Adobe Acrobat reader) then E-mail: Here giving as much information as possible.  Please note we can only help with router setup problems if you are a member of our FREE services.
