Save Password Check Box Is Unavailable

1) When you start Windows 95/98, do not click Cancel in the logon dialog box. If you do not have a password, create a new one by typing it in the Password box, or create a null password by clicking OK. If you create a null password, you are no longer prompted to log on to Windows 95/98 when Windows starts. Creating a null password does not prevent other people from accessing your computer, but does allow you to save your password when you are using Dial-Up Networking or a shared network resource. NOTE: Creating a null password does not allow you to save your Dial-Up Networking password if you are using user profiles. Using user profiles prevents the Dial-Up Networking password from being saved. 2) Install the client for Microsoft Networks in Network properties and choose Windows Logon (See Network components). 3) Password cache file may be corrupt - rename <user>.pwl (<user> is the windows logon name) in the Windows folder and restart computer. 4) rna.pwl file corrupt (this is only available if DUN server is installed - rename and restart. 5) Password caching disabled as a result of running the system policy editor HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network. If password caching disabled there will be a DisablePwdCacheing DWORD entry in the right hand side pane with a value of one change this to zero. 6) Registry entry for auto logon HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\RealModeNet delete a binary entry named auto logon. 7) Follow Reinstalling DUN below.

Dial-Up Connection box appears but the Password box is blank and the Remember my password check box is greyed out.

1) Click BACK and follow 'Network components' then restart PC. Enter user name and leave password box blank when prompted. 2) Dial-Up Networking may be corrupt - Follow 'Reinstalling DUN' below.

3) The password cache file may be corrupt - Start, find, files or folders, in named box type username.pwl (where username = your windows logon name). Rename this file and restart computer. 4) Password caching is disabled - Check registry KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network. Screen shots from Dial Up Networking.

To help you sort out any problems we have put in some screen shots. All you have to do is match the screens in your DUN with the ones here.

How to check your Dial Up Networking settings.

From the Windows desktop double click then you should see If you don’t then you will need to reinstall DUN, to do this see REINSTALLING DUN. If you have this icon double click it and you should see:

Everybody will have an icon for MAKE NEW CONNECTION, you may not have any others or you may have lots or only one other icon. If you only use one Internet Service Provider (ISP) then in total you should have two icons. If you have two ISP's then you should have three icons. If you have more icons than you should have then we suggest you delete them all and see HOW TO MAKE A NEW CONNECTION. To delete an icon click on it once so that it is blue (highlighted) then press the DEL or DELETE key on the KEYBOARD. If you have the correct number of icons then it will be easier to check the settings. Here is how to check the settings for a FREESERVE connection. Move the arrow (cursor) over the image and RIGHT CLICK it, a menu will drop down, click PROPERTIES then you will see:

On here you need to check the telephone number is correct for your ISP. For FREESERVE the area code is 0845 and in the TELEPHONE NUMBER box you need 0796699 the COUNTRY CODE needs to be where your ISP is NOT where you are. Make sure USE AREA CODE AND DIALING PROPERTIES is ticked and your CORRECT modem is listed under CONNECT USING. If you are ex-directory or withhold your telephone number this WILL NOT work and you need to set you settings like this:

To get your settings looking like this for Caller Line Identification CLID (ex-directory) users, first REMOVE the numbers from AREA CODE and TELEPHONE NUMBER. Leave the AREA CODE BLANK and for FREESERVE in the TELEPHONE NUMBER BOX type 1470,08450796699 . NORMAL users and CLID users you now need to click SERVER TYPES and you will see:

On here you need to make sure ONLY TCP/IP is ticked. Now click TCP/IP SETTINGS and you will see:

Make sure SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS and SERVER ASSIGNED NAME SERVER ADDRESSES have a dot next to them and USE DEFAULT GATEWAY ON REMOTE NETWORK has a tick. Now click OK and that will take you to the previous screen where you click OK again to return to the screen with the icons on called DIAL UP NETWORKING. Now follow this section below to see if it works.

How to connect through Dial Up Networking.

From the screen with the icons on called DIAL UP NETWORKING. From this screen double click the icon you have just looked at and you should see a screen similar to this:

For your USERNAME you need to fist know your e-mail address as it is part of it. EXAMPLE if your E-MAIL address is john@smith.fsnet.co.uk your USERNAME would be smith.fsnet.co.uk ALL in SMALL letters. Only you know your PASSWORD. But it is CaSe SeNsItIvE for example if your password is MillenniumUK you CANT type millenniumuk or MILLENNIUMUK it has to be the same as when you chose it.  Note: You can only check the status of caps lock by checking the Caps lock Light on your keyboard, or taskbar (shown below with time 12:28).  Now click CONNECT you should see a screen like this:

Hopefully then next to your clock you will see: A picture of two green computers. If you get this then you have solved your problem! If not then try making a new connection.

How to make a new connection.

If you have followed the steps above and it has not worked. On the screen called DIAL UP NETWORKING (below) click on an icon once so that it is blue (highlighted) then press the DEL or DELETE key on the KEYBOARD. Do this until you see:

Double click MAKE NEW CONNECTION to get this: Type in the name as RKD-Freeserve and click NEXT >

Make sure the AREA CODE is 0845 and type in 0796699 for TELEPHONE NUMBER. Make sure COUNTRY CODE is UNITED KINGDOM (44) and click NEXT and you will see:

Now click FINISH and you will return to the screen where you clicked MAKE NEW CONNECTION (called DIAL UP NETWORKING). Now you MUST go to the top of this page and follow HOW TO CHECK YOUR DIAL UP NETWORKING SETTINGS. If it STILL fails after this follow REINSTALLING DUN below.

Reinstalling DUN.

From the windows desktop click on then and then , now you will see:

Click on WINDOWS SETUP and you will see:

On here you are looking for COMMUNICATIONS, click this once so it is like this:

Now click DETAILS and you will see:

On here you need to look for DIAL UP NETWORKING and HYPER TERMINAL. If they DON’T have a tick next to them put a tick in then click OK, then on the next screen click APPLY and then OK and RESTART your computer. If they ARE ticked REMOVE the ticks then click OK, on the next screen click APPLY and OK and RESTART you computer. Now follow the steps in this section again and put the ticks back then choose OK and APPLY and OK on the next screen and RESTART your computer again. Because you have reinstalled DUN you will now need to follow the section called HOW TO MAKE A NEW CONNECTION.

Hints and Tips.

If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.

If you have checked your Internet (IE4 or IE5) and e-mail (OE4 or OE5) settings on the previous page and DUN on here we suggest you look at TESTING YOU MODEM if you cant get a connection. Look at NETWORK COMPONENTS if you cant send e-mail but can get Internet pages or if you cant get on the Internet but can get e-mail.

Got any suggestions or can't sort out the problem from here, first PLEASE check the related pages below then E-mail: Here giving as much information as possible.
