To help you sort out any problems we have put in some screen shots. All you have to do is match the screens in your Internet Explorer with the ones here.

How to check your Internet settings.

From the Windows desktop:

 click START then CONTROL PANEL:

 

Then, CATEGORY, LARGE ICONS to get to this:

 

Click Internet options to get:

 

First click on the Advanced tab to see:

 

First click Restore advanced settings, then click Reset:

 

Click reset again. 

Now click Close and close all open screens, you will be back to the desktop screen:

 

Open Internet Explorer by clicking the blue E next to start.  Or by looking in All Programs for the Internet Explorer icon with the blue E logo.  You will get a screen similar to this:

 

Match the screen clicking Use recommended security and compatibility settings.  Click OK and you will have the Internet Explorer 9 page.  Now close all screens down and click Start, Control Panel:

 

Click Internet Options: 

 

Make sure the address under HOME PAGE is HTTP://WWW.RKD.ORG.UK  We recommend you also tick Delete browsing history on exit.  Now click DELETE:

 

Tick all boxes then click delete.  Once back to the previous screen click on SECURITY then you will see:

Click Reset all zones to Default Level.  Tick Enable Protected Mode.  Now Click Privacy to see:

Click Default and make sure the slider bar says Medium.  Tick all boxes to match the screen above.  Now click Connections:

 

If the DIAL-UP AND VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK SETTINGS box is blank you may be using Ethernet Broadband.  If you have a USB modem or dialup internet you should see a connection here, if not you need to check your Network connections, click BACK at the top of the screen. If it is not blank it should say the name of your Internet Company. It should also say DEFAULT after it if you have more than one item in the box, if it does not say DEFAULT click on the name (eg FREESERVE) to highlight (turn blue) then click SET DEFAULT. Now make sure there is a dot on ALWAYS DIAL MY DEFAULT CONNECTION.  Click APPLY and OK.  Now Restart your PC and try.

How to reinstall IE9.

From the windows desktop:

 click on Start, then Control panel:

Click Category and then Large icons:

and then Programs and Features:

Click View installed updates to see:

Look for Windows Internet Explorer 9, select it and click Uninstall:

Select yes then follow the screens through and make sure you restart your PC.  Once restarted either wait for Windows to prompt you to install Internet Explorer 9 or from the windows desktop:

 click on Start, then Control panel:

Click Category and then Large icons:

Click Windows Update:

Click Check for updates or it may say 'X' updates are available, click that:

Simply look through the list.  Place ticks next to all Critical or important updates including Windows Internet Explorer 9.  Click ok.  They will get installed now.  Restart your PC.  Try your internet again.

  Hints and Tips.

If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.

If you are still having problems after checking your Internet settings try using Internet Explorer (No add-ons).  This is found in Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

You need to determine whether you are getting a connection.  If you are not getting a connection look at testing your modem or router setup.

Firewalls can block any program from internet access, check Internet Explorer is allowed.

Many programs conflict with each other so if you get a connection but no internet pages try closing all running programs then use Task manager to close anything you may not be aware about.  To do this hold down CTRL+ALT+DEL, on the blue screen select Start Task Manager then on the box that appears click Processes:

Click Show processes from all users first.  Now ignore items with a blank user name or SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE and NETWORK SERVICE.  Also Ignore EXPLORER.EXE and TASKMAN.EXE under Image name.  Close the rest (On the example you would close: ashdisp, dwm, mspaint, pen_tabletus..., reader_sl, sidebar, soundman, speedfan, taskhost ONLY) by selecting the item (like mspaint in the example) then click End Process:

 

Click End Process and the item disappears.  Repeat the process with other items.  Now close Windows Task Manager and try your Internet again.

On Windows 7 there is a brilliant tool called system restore where you can go back in time.  Try it!  Click Start>All programs>Accessories>system tools>system restore.  You get this:

 

Click Next:

 

First tick the Show more restore points box.  On the list, click a date that is before you had problems.  A system check point is a very good restore point.  Click next:

 

Click Finish and follow this.  It will restart your PC and restore files back to as they were.

Useful shortcut keys:

Back to a previous page - Backspace key

Refresh page - F5

Full screen - F11

Stop loading a page - ESC

Add a page to FAVOURITES so that you donít have to remember the address - Click FAVOURITES then ADD TO FAVORITES.

In IE9 you can lock toolbars. To do so press the ALT key then click view>toolbars> then click lock toolbars.
