Screen shots from Outlook Express
6.
To help you sort out any problems we have put in some screen shots. All you have to do is match the screens in your Outlook Express with the ones here.
How to check your general settings and mail setup.
From the Windows desktop open MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS by
clicking start>all programs>Outlook Express. This will open up the main screen:
Now lets look at e-mail setup for a FREESERVE account. Click TOOLS then ACCOUNTS and then MAIL you will now see:
If you have more than one mail account then you will see several lines in here, one should say MAIL (DEFAULT), this is your main account. What you can do is check your mail settings by clicking PROPERTIES but we believe it is easier to remove the account if you only have one. To REMOVE the account and create a FREESERVE mail account first click on the name under ACCOUNT (in this case called
General) so that it turns blue (highlighted), now click REMOVE. Now click ADD and then MAIL and you will see:
On this screen you need to choose a NAME for your mail account, this can either be your name or a company name. Once done click NEXT to see:
Now you need to type in your E-MAIL ADDRESS. This must be all in small letters with no spaces. An example, your e-mail address may be Emma@Smith.Freeserve.co.UK you must type in emma@smith.freeserve.co.uk now click NEXT to see:
For a FREESERVE e-mail account the box that reads MY INCOMING MAIL SERVER IS A _____ SERVER must be set to POP3. In the INCOMING MAIL SERVER box type in pop.freeserve.com all in small letters. In the OUTGOING MAIL SERVER box type in smtp.freeserve.com all in small letters. Now click NEXT and you will see:
In the ACCOUNT NAME box you need to type in whatever follows the @ in your e-mail address all in small letters. If your e-mail address were emma@smith.freeserve.co.uk you would type in smith.freeserve.co.uk for the PASSWORD you must type in the SAME password that you use on the Internet. This must be the same as when you set it up. If your password was 123aBc you CANT type in 123abc it MUST be 123aBc now click NEXT:
Click FINISH and you will return to the screen where you started from (called Internet accounts). On this screen click PROPERTIES then CONNECTIONS and you will see:
First put a tick in ALWAYS CONNECT TO THIS ACCOUNT USING. In the white box make sure this reads the name of your FREESERVE connection. For example it may say FREESERVE, FREESERVE FOR * YOUR NAME * or if you followed the DUN section RKD2000. Now click ADVANCED and you will see:
To optimise your account on this screen OUTGOING MAIL should be 25 and INCOMING MAIL 110. Set the SERVER TIMEOUTS to LONG and put a tick in BREAK APART MESSAGES LARGER THAN _____ KB. Now click APPLY and OK. You will return to the screen where you started from (called Internet accounts). Click CLOSE then close OUTLOOK EXPRESS and restart your computer and that should be ok. If not you will need to reinstall Outlook Express so go to REINSTALLING OUTLOOK EXPRESS.
How to check your newsgroup settings.
From the main screen of Outlook Express click TOOLS then ACCOUNTS and NEWS. You will see a screen like this headed news:
If you have more than one news account then you will see several lines in here, one should say NEWS (DEFAULT), this is your main account. What you can do is check your news settings by clicking PROPERTIES but we believe it is easier to remove the account if you only have one. To REMOVE the account and create a FREESERVE news account first click on the name under ACCOUNT (in this case called
General) so that it turns blue (highlighted), now click REMOVE. Now click ADD and then NEWS and you will see:
On this screen you need to choose a NAME for your news account, this can either be your name or a company name.
In the box called NEWS SERVER type in news.freeserve.net all in small letters. Now click NEXT:
Click FINISH and you will return to the screen where you started from (called Internet accounts). On this screen click CLOSE then close OUTLOOK EXPRESS and restart your computer and that should be ok. If not you will need to reinstall Outlook Express so go to REINSTALLING OUTLOOK EXPRESS.
Reinstalling Outlook Express.
From the Windows desktop click, Start, control panel:

Click Add or Remove programs. You will then see a screen similar to this:
Click Add/Remove Windows components. To get:
Look for INTERNET EXPLORER and Outlook Express un-tick both, then click Next and you will see:
Click finish and restart your PC and repeat the process but put a tick next to INTERNET EXPLORER and OUTLOOK EXPRESS this time. This does not always work, so try one of these. Go online here and install all critical updates and service packs. If you have a Windows XP CD. Put it in your PC and click start, run and type sfc /scanow then click OK. A bar will slowly progress, restart your PC after this. Also try leaving your XP CD in your PC and restart tapping the space bar. You will then get three options. Press R, then enter when asked witch Windows XP to login and then type your XP administrator password pressing enter after. Now type chkdsk /r Restart your PC after. If this fails you need to reinstall your internet providers CD. If this fails consider reinstalling Windows XP.
If you know you did not alter any settings on your PC many problems go away after restarting your PC.
On Windows XP there is a brilliant tool called system restore where you can go back in time. Try it! Click Start>All programs>Accessories>system tools>system restore. You get this:
Click Next:
On the Calendar, click a date that is in bold or stands out, On the right click a time. A system check point is a very good restore point. Click next:
Click Next and follow this. It will restart your PC and restore files back to as they were.
